The answer to the question on our home page...

What's different about these children?

The children on our home page receive regular chiropractic care to maintain their optimum health. Every parent needs to know this incredible benefit to their family's health!
(by the way, that's Drs. Jameson and Gossett's son Paul and daughter Jillian)

Chiropractic Is For Kids Too!

An article by Dr. Jameson

Here is Doctor Jameson performing a chiropractic spinal adjustment on his daughter Jillian.

I often urge parents to bring in their children, toddlers, and infants for a chiropractic check-up, and if needed, chiropractic spinal adjustments. This often takes parents by surprise. 'Why would you adjust my infant? My little baby couldn't possibly have spinal problems. My child doesn't complain of back pain!'

The fact of the matter is that newborns, toddlers, and adolescents can suffer from spinal misalignments, also known as subluxations. The only problem with infants is that they can't tell you when their neck hurts or when their stomach is malfunctioning. They can't tell you when they have a headache. All they can do is cry. Your pediatrician tells you it must be "colic" or some other unexplained phenomenon. In many cases, these unexplained crying fits and irritability may be due to subluxations.

A diagram showing the impact of spinal subluxations on nerve flow.

When I check the spines of infants and toddlers, it is quite common to detect areas of muscle spasm and spinal swelling (often causing a "wincing" response by the child). Very gentle chiropractic adjustments restore joint mobility, reduce the localized muscle spasm, and reduce nerve interference to the organs and glands. In most cases, infants fall asleep following an adjustment, as their bodies naturally relax due to the decreased spinal and neurological stress.  For more information about chiropractic research in infants and children, please go to the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association's website, www.icpa4kids.com.

These photos show standard medical practice for delivering a child.

Notice the head rotation in the first photo.  This twisting can subluxate the baby's cervical spine (neck area).  If your baby was born using forceps as shown in the second photo, then cranial bone abnormalities and upper neck problems may occur.  The third photo shows a baby being inverted with the back arched.

This fourth photo shows a vacuum extractor being pulled off the baby's skull. This instrument can lead to brain swelling, cranial bone abnormalities and upper neck problems. This last photo shows the baby's head being pulled on.

What can lead to irritated nerves and spinal subluxations in infants and toddlers? Let us start with the birthing process. (for more information go to http://www.icpa4kids.org/research/chiropractic/birthtrauma.htm) The photos you see above, although difficult to look at, give a dramatic presentation at what happens in a typical medical delivery. Difficult deliveries, especially those involving the use of forceps or suction often lead to the baby's first spinal subluxation in the neck region. These subluxations can cause illness and disease in your child. Studies have found hemorrhage and indentation in the lower brain stem, combined with vertebral subluxations of the upper neck area, (see http://www.icpa4kids.org/research/chiropractic/sids.htm).

Drs. Jameson and Gossett enjoy the presence of infants and children in their office. As parents themselves, they have found a unique gift for making young ones very comfortable in the healing environment of our chiropractic office. You can be assured that your children are in good hands under our care.
